Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises (1881 – 1973) was an Austrian philosopher and economist. Ludwig was a wunderkind; at the age of twelve, he could speak German, Yiddish, French, Polish, read Latin and understand Ukrainian.
Mises was born to a Jewish family, and when the Nazis started their rule, he decided to leave Europe. In 1940, he immigrated to the United States, where he published “Human Action”. Libertarian movement in the United States was greatly influenced by Mises and his work.

What is wrong with our age is precisely the widespread ignorance of the role which these policies of economic freedom played in the technological evolution of the last two hundred years. What is called “orthodox” economics is in most countries barred from the universities and is virtually unknown to the leading statesmen, politicians, and writers. The blame for the unsatisfactory state of economic affairs can certainly not be placed upon a science which both rulers and masses despise and ignore.
The recurrence of periods of depression and mass unemployment has discredited capitalism in the opinion of injudicious people. Yet these events are not the outcome of the operation of the free market. They are on the contrary the result of well-intentioned but ill-advised government interference with the market.
What can prevent the coming of totalitarian socialism is only a thorough change in ideologies. What we need is neither anti-socialism nor anti-communism but an open positive endorsement of that system to which we owe all the wealth that distinguishes our age from the comparatively straitened conditions of ages gone by.
Government cannot make man richer, but it can make him poorer.
